Valentine’s day this year was an occasion without an event. There was no nice dinner. There were no thoughtful exchanges of tokens or words. There was no delightful conversation.
I pretty much spent it alone. I’m not sad about it, though. I get the day all to myself; just mucking about, taking photographs, playing games and just being at ease.
I’m alone because nobody’s around, due to the coinciding of the first day of Chinese New Year with Valentine’s Day. The city is empty. The lots of vacant. When the holidays pass over, the city will be bustling again, and cars will fill the lots that are now vacant. My days, too, will be bustling and filled. Just not today. Today, I’ll just enjoy the open roads and spend time with myself.
I know the solitude will only last as long as the festivities. So, happy Valentine’s Day to those who are with your loved ones, and happy Vacant Lot day to those who are content with the serenity of solitude.
